bioRe is certified according to the following standards :
Farmers participation and representation
bioRe India provides its farmers equal chance to participate in development of the organization. For this purpose bioRe India undertake democratic representation system of farmers. In this system farmers elect their representative in their village. These elected representatives from each location/center/pocket further elect two representatives in the supreme body of farmers called PRB. Prdoducer representative body(PRB) elects 5 members panel and sends it to the principal shareholder bioRe foundation and foundation nominates two of these 5 farmers as directors in board of directors of bioRe India. bioRe’s social wing bioRe Association is fully governed and managed by farmers and all their managing committee members including President are farmers.
India is worlds largest organic cotton producer and big part of it comes from state of Madhyapradesh. Since, GM cotton was introduced in India nearly a decade ago; organic farmers of the state were facing problems in getting Non GM seeds. We have been facing challenges in getting good quality non GM seeds which could satisfy our farmer needs and industry needs. Specially, the Non GM cotton seed developed under organic situation and for organic situation were not available with any private or public institution. In this direction bioRe India limited together its farmer’s social organization bioRe Association joined hands with University of Agriculture Sciences, Dharwad. Dr S.S. Patil helped organization to develop a breeding and evaluation programme for organic farmers of our region as first of its kind of programme for organic situation both for heavy and light soil situations and irrigated and rain-fed organic situations. FiBL Switzerland helped bioRe India as scientific backstopping partner to implement the research work efficiently from 2011-2017.
In this direction, a workshop was organized at University of Agriculture Science Dharwad (UASD), Karnataka in 2011 inviting several stakeholders. In this workshop UASD has promised to help to interested company for producing the non GM Hirsutum lines, Hirsutum hybrids and Arboriem lines for providing the non GM quality seed to their farmers.
We at bioRe initiated our Non GM cotton breeding and evaluation trials known as Cotton Cultivar Trial in season 2012-13. Since then, we have been doing these intensive trials under organic situation, both for heavy and light soils and irrigated and rain-fed situations. Organic farmers are invited to participate in evaluation and pilot trials. Multilocation trials are being conducted. The elimination of cultivars is done based on selection from the farming group and industry parameters.
In these trials we are developing new lines and evaluating hundreds of cultivars including Hirsutum and Arborium varieties and Hirsutum hybrids at on station trials and on farm trials. On farm trials are conducted at organic farmer’s field through Baby trials, MLTs and Pilot trials etc.
Our research work has advanced to a stage where we have provided 9 cultivars to SAU college Khandwa for TFL release process . Every year, we aim to provide few cultivars for release process. We were privileged that Agriculture College Khandwa has 2.5 acres of organic land available for such trials. We are proud to say that we at bioRe implement first and largest intensive non gm cotton breeding and evaluation programme under organic situation in India.
GMO is the biggest threat to organic cotton in India where 96% of the cotton produced is GMO. Getting zero contaminated seeds is very difficult and also controlling GMO contamination at farming level is a big challenge. However, at bioRe we focus on control of GMO and make efforts sothat we can minimize risk of any contamination in our production. For GMO control our measures are most acknowledged amongst organic cotton fraternity. In all cases, we intimate our clients even if we have small problem resulting despite of these best efforts. We have been privilege to have very serious . long term and committed clients who always support our farmers in challenges they face and efforts they make.
In simple words following levels are identified at bioRe to control GMO from seed production to fiber.
|Level(s)||Stage of testing||Process||Method|
(Seed Procurement level)
|Before procuring seeds:||Advance contract with seed companies.
Our production team visit the hybrid production fields and does on the sport Strip test of the leaves and cotton bolls.
|At the time of procuring seeds:||When we procure seeds from companies, every single lot undergoes PCR testing based on our sampling method. Only clear lots are purchased. Results are intimated to our principal client Remei AG.||PCR|
|At the time of distributing seeds to farmers||A confirmative test is done with strip with few leader farmers to confirm that we are distributing Non GM seeds to farmers and there is no contamination in seeds. Extension personnel shall paste the negetive strip in their register for reference.
By 2020, bioRe Intends to become self sustained for its seed requirement as 9 of its cotton gynotypes are at final stage of release. Once released bioRe shall have its own Non GM cotton seeds bred, evaluated and produced for organic situation, first of its kind in India. High level of SOP are implemented to control GM at bioRe seed research.
|Level 2 (Farming level)||At the field level||In case extension or ICS team finds any deviation in the field, they will do random plant strip tests. Violating farmers are taken out.||Strip Test|
|At the time of cotton purchase from farmer (at farmers house)||The major test is done at the farmer house when we purchase cotton from farmer. Every single purchase is tested. Only negetive cotton is bought. Strip test is compulsory here for every purchase. The sample is to be kept by the extension personnel for reference and strip shall be pasted on a register with purchase details for future verification. Than cotton is transported to the Ginning plant.||Strip test|
|Level 3 (Industry level)||Testing at ginnery when lorry comes at ginnery||Every lorry which brings tested cotton from the extension is again tested at Ginnery by the ginning team. Sample is kept and strip is pasted for record. In case cotton of any lorry is found positive, it is kept as separate heap . However, farmers are paid premium on this cotton as the cotton was found negative at his doorstep. Every extension head has a separate heap sothat the contamination if any is personalized.||Strip test|
|Testing for certification purpose||Certification body takes a sample from the field and sends it for testing.||PCR|
|Testing of fibre by Remei||Remei takes samples (through third party sampling) of fibre from each lot and sends it for PCR analysis in a European lab. Once lot is found ok than only they provide direction for dispatch.
Clients are free to take samples before goods are dispatched from our ginning unit. Once dispatched, it shall become clients responsibility to undertake necessary controls.
